Best Hot Chocolate Powder
With the cooler months coming around, I always start to crave warm drinks. Fall is the perfect time to try out new products and recipes. Besides coffee and tea, hot chocolate is one of my favorite hot drinks but I had written it off as completely unhealthy when I started my journey to healthier living a few years back. I did not want to be consuming lots of sugar, corn syrup, and the GMOs found in most instant hot cocoa mixes. Well, I’m happy to say I found a delicious, healthier alternative and the best hot chocolate powder I’ve tasted. Its called Cocoa Mojo by EnerHealth and seriously tastes better than the artificial junk powder I used to enjoy. I will mention that this product does still contain sugar because it is hot chocolate, after all. I have it only as a special drink around the holidays and while backpacking.
Cocoa Mojo has only 3 ingredients, is vegan, gluten free, and organic! It also gives your immune system a boost because it is infused with 6 medicinal mushroom species.
Organic Non-Dutched Cocoa
Non-dutched, or non alkalized, means that the cocoa powder is in its natural state and it has not been chemically processed. Non-alkalized cocoa is pure roasted cocoa beans crushed into a powder with most of the fat removed. Alkalized cocoa, on the other hand, has been chemically treated and then neutralized, raising the pH. It is less bitter, but the process removes beneficial antioxidants and flavonoids.
6 Medicinal Mushrooms
This cocoa mix is infused with a blend of six medicinal mushrooms that contain a wide range of polysaachrides. Studies have shown these polysaachrides to be immune boosting. Herbalists also believe the mushrooms have anti-cancer properties and Cordyceps is known to increase athletic endurance and improve exercise recovery. Adding dried mushrooms to hot water in order to extract the beneficial nutrients from them is a 5,000 year old Traditional Chinese Medicine practice. The mushroom varieties included in Cocoa Mojo are Agaricus Blazei, Cordyceps Sinensis, Grifola Frondosa, Ganoderma Lucidum, Coriollus Versicolor, and Lentinula Edodes. If you’re worried about tasting them, don’t be! I don’t really like mushrooms, and to be honest they sort of creep me out, but this mix is so good you cannot even taste them.
Coconut Palm Sugar
Coconut palm sugar, or coconut sugar, is made from the sap of the flowers on the coconut palm. It is comprised of 70-79% sucrose, 3-9% glucose, and 3-9% fructose; however, sucrose is 50% fructose so in reality, coconut sugar is 38-48% fructose which is around the same a honey and regular table sugar. On the positive side, coconut sugar is the healthiest of the sugar choices out there and has a very low glycemic index of 35. I would definitely prefer consuming coconut sugar over corn syrup or cane sugar. Coconut sugar is, however, still a sugar and should not be consumed in large quantities because it can tax your liver just like other sugars. There is only about 3 grams of sugar in a single serving.
Overall, I really enjoy this tasty chocolate mushroom drink and I hope that you will try it out to see for yourself. Cocoa Mojo is the best hot chocolate powder I’ve found and is a treat that the whole family can enjoy, kids love it too! Try making it with coconut or almond milk. If you want more calories while out backpacking, you can add powdered milk or butter or a tablespoon of coconut oil. I’ve also tried Cocoa Mojo in smoothies and mixed with other foods and its a nice addition. The best price I’ve seen it for is $14.99 at the Health Ranger Store and the EnerHealth website. Amazon also carries it for a few dollars more. Try it out and let me know if you enjoy it as much as I do!
