Vegan Backpacking Food – The Best Freeze Dried Meals

It can be difficult to find vegan backpacking food and meals that are lightweight, provide enough calories, and reconstitute quickly.  Vegan backpackers definitely have to plan a little bit more and do some digging to find the right foods that fit the criteria, taste good, and provide a balanced backpacking diet.  There are more vegan options now than ever before but searching for them among all the other freeze dried backpacking foods can be time consuming.  That’s why I’ve searched the internet for you, taste tested, and put together a list of the best freeze dried/prepackaged vegan backpacking meals.  If you are looking for ideas so that you can put together your own meals, see my page on vegan backpacking food ideas.


Good To Go 

Good To Go was founded by a chef who has cooked at 4 star restaurants in New York, beaten the Iron Chef, and traveled to over 20 countries to study their regional foods.  Their meals are dehydrated, not freeze dried, so they take a little bit longer to reconstitute than a freeze dried meal would.  The boil safe resealable bag is a nice feature so that you can save part of your meal for later.  While not organic, Good To Go offers simple ingredients and mostly vegetarian and vegan options.

Mary Jane’s Farm

Mary Jane’s Farm is an organic farm and bed and breakfast located in Idaho.  Mary Jane Butters, the founder, was one of the first female forest service rangers in the US.  Besides the farm and bed and breakfast, they also offer a wide range of products and services including a magazine, a farm school, a you pick club, emergency food storage, bedding, lighting, towels, and more.  This company offers a fully organic, mostly vegetarian line with some vegan options as well.

Backpacker’s Pantry

Backpacker’s Pantry has a great reputation in the backpacking food industry.  They have been around since 1951 and are run out of Boulder, CO.   Backpacker’s Pantry is currently owned by the Smith Family, who also own Colorado Spice which provides many of the ingredients for their meals.  Some of their meals are organic and all use ingredients primarily sourced from the US.  Their food is MSG free and the packaging is BPA free.  They also offer some of their meals and ingredients in bulk.

Paleo Meals to Go

Paleo Meals to Go meals are geared towards hikers following a Paleo Diet.  Seems weird that I would be writing about them in a vegan article, right?  Well, they offer some really yummy vegan breakfasts, different from what I’ve seen anywhere else.  These breakfasts are gluten free, grain free, soy free, and vegan.  They offer a lot of calories and fat and are kind of like an alternative to oatmeal.

    Thank you very much for this list you put together.

    Finding vegan food that you can take with when backpacking, as you know, can be a bit of a challenge.

    Being a bit of a chill-nut myself, I’m presented with only one problem…

    Choosing between Good To Go’s Three Bean Chilli and Mary Jane’s Kettle Chilli…

    I think I’ll order both!

    Thanks for the awesome alternatives to Backpacker’s Pantry- I do like them but it’s always nice to switch it up! My biggest challenge has been going through the ingredients for these kinds of meals in order to choose healthy options for trekking while also avoiding trigger foods for ulcerative colitis haha.

    Have you ever helped someone balance this before, or do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

      I don’t know much about ulcerative colitis other than fiber can further irritate the condition.   What are some of the trigger foods for your condition?
